How to Install an eSIM on iPhone: Step-by-Step

Before you start
Make sure your iPhone meets these requirements before installing an eSIM:
- iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or newer
- Device is unlocked (not tied to a single carrier)
- iOS 12.1 or later (iOS 17+ recommended)
- Active Wi-Fi or mobile data connection
To check if your iPhone is unlocked, go to Settings → General → About and look for "SIM Lock" or "Carrier Lock" — it should say "No SIM restrictions".
Step 1 — Purchase your eSIM plan
Browse Vsimer's plans for your destination, select the data amount that suits your trip, and complete checkout. You will receive a confirmation email containing your QR code.
Step 2 — Open eSIM settings
On your iPhone, go to:
- Settings
- Cellular (or "Mobile Data" in some regions)
- Tap Add eSIM
On iPhone 14 and later (US models), there is no physical SIM tray, so you will see an Add eSIM button prominently on the Cellular screen.
Step 3 — Scan the QR code
Tap Use QR Code and point your camera at the QR code from your Vsimer email. The iPhone will read the code and prompt you to confirm adding the new plan.
If you are using the same iPhone to view your email, you can also tap Enter Details Manually and paste the activation code.
Step 4 — Label your eSIM
iOS will ask you to give the new plan a label. We recommend something like "Vsimer — Europe" or the destination name so you can easily tell it apart from your primary line.
Step 5 — Set your default lines
iOS will ask which line to use for calls, messages, and mobile data. Select your new eSIM for mobile data while keeping your home SIM for calls and SMS. This way you get cheap local data without losing your regular phone number.
Activating when you arrive
Most Vsimer plans activate automatically when your device connects to a local network. If it does not, go to Settings → Cellular → [Your eSIM line] and toggle it on. You can also enable Data Roaming from that same screen if required by the plan.
Tips
- Download the eSIM before you travel — you need an internet connection to install it.
- Keep the QR code email in case you need to reinstall.
- Some plans require you to enable data roaming in iOS settings even when you are in the destination country.
